Historical influences in my work
Nikola Djurek will show and explain few of his projects where historical influences were very important. OLD / NEW connections. From ideas, sketches, design decisions to final products.
Specifying type consistency
Consistency is one of the main qualities of successful typefaces. What do designers do in order to achieve it throughout their work and how it relates to readability of their typefaces? If topography is a way to describe the essence behind landscape features, type specifications are descriptions of the important characteristics in particular typeface designs.

Rational relativization of typographical rules
(Does the knowledge of typographic rules make us a good designers?)
In his lecture, Tomasz Bierkowski points out that the knowledge of typographical rules (especially microtypography) doesn’t make graphic designers automatically professional.
It is not enough to only know the rules; it is just a base to find a solution in building proper communication by typography… Tomasz explains where are the mental traps and how to work responsibly and effectively with typographic rules.
- Andrej Krátky (SK)
NARA – the typeface that never existed
The story of the search for gaps in type classification. Driven by an idea to fill the “white space on the map” of the type history, the Nara typeface started as a thought inspired by a type classification scheme. It was completed more than 20 years after its initial design.
- Filip Blažek (CZ)
The World of Diacritics
A visual guide to the world of European accents. How to design correct diacritical marks, which combinations of accented letters can appear in one word, how to kern letters with diacritical marks and what are the most common mistakes type designers make.
- Aljaž Vindiš (SI)
Written in stone (Translating the dialect and environment of Slovenian Alps and Carst into chiseled words)
Slovenian language is as rich as the Slovenian landscape. Typography is often met with limitations in interpreting that richness. The projects for Čiginj and Grintovec present a trial in overcoming the limits by innovation in type design, both in form and in relation to phonetics. The second project is a logical continuation of the first, educating the participants of the TipoBrda workshop about the challenges and facilitating them to design the solutions, teaching them the craft of stone carving in the process.
